They Can At Least Take Solace That He's Buying Local, Not Online

It's a common scam that this guy is running: He slaps fake barcodes on merchandise in stores like Lowe's, then scans 'em to pay a fraction of the real value. He then probably sells the stuff for a profit on eBay or Craigslist. With computers, printers, and labels, and the self-checkout stands, it's way too quick and easy to do this. (KHOU-TV/Houston)
