Disappeared Without A Peep
-
A study says that most feature-length silent films are now lost due to decay and neglect over the past 100 years. It WAS an art form, it WAS a mass medium, and now most traces of it are disappearing. In a time when everything's digitally recorded, the idea that vast swaths of culture can be lost forever is alien, but it has happened, and, if digital formats change, it can happen again, maybe not to that extent, but we're already seeing that some stuff in old analog formats isn't available in digital form and thus is ceasing to be accessible. Does that worry you? (AP via Newser)
