How accountable is government for the things on which they spend your money? In Connecticut two years ago, the state threw a lot of money around in a small business program intended to create jobs. They gave this guy $150,000 in cash and loans to open a burrito shop. The shop's now closed, and now we learn that he hasn't paid back a penny of the loan and has been a defendant in five collections and foreclosure actions in the last three years. Three years, and the money was given to him TWO years ago. Did they do ANY due diligence in vetting him? Or was the endorsement from a state representative more important? And why aren't questions raised BEFORE the money changes hands? (Hartford Courant)
