She was one of the ecoterrorists who ran around the U.S. torching SUV dealerships and meat plants and labs and stuff, but she had had enough of the fugitive life, was remorseful, and wanted to turn herself in. But she couldn't. See, she's Canadian, she was hiding out in Vancouver, and when she contacted the cops to arrange to be arrested and turned over to U.S. authorities, they wouldn't do it. Why? Because, technically, there was no arrest warrant for her in Canada. And that meant she'd been running for seven years from cops who wouldn't have arrested her even if they knew who she was. She eventually got taken to the border to be taken into custody, and has been sentenced to 5 years and $13.9 million restitution. But had she stayed in Canada, they couldn't have done anything to her. (Toronto Star)
