The Boss Of 'Macho Row'
-
Dead: Jim Fregosi, shortstop, manager, baseball lifer, at 71 after a stroke suffered on a baseball cruise in the Caribbean. Won the pennant as manager of the '93 Phillies. Played for the Angels, Mets (after a trade that sent Nolan Ryan to Anaheim and is considered one of the Mets' worst trades ever), Rangers, and Pirates, and managed the Phillies, Angels, Blue Jays, and White Sox. Later a scout for the Braves. You know, the real topic here is about learning that the athletes you watched as a kid are now in their 70s and 80s. I saw Fregosi play several times. 71?!? Gone? Wow, time flew. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
