Soccer's growing in the U.S... in some quarters. In others, not so much. And in the case of Chivas USA, the second franchise in Los Angeles, it's been so bad that the league has taken it over just as the new season looms, and is looking to find a buyer who will build a new stadium to keep the team around here. This was a ridiculous exercise from the start, a transparent and ill-conceived plan to rope in fans of Mexican descent, Didn't work for many reasons -- a lot of Mexican Americans were fans of OTHER Mexican teams, the marketing seemed aimed only at Spanish speakers and deliberately positioned to repel Anglos, the team stinks, and it's as if someone started a baseball team in another country and called it New York Yankees UK or Los Angeles Dodgers Japan. Fans know the difference. I like soccer, I live maybe 20 minutes from their stadium, and I've been to see them a grand total of zero times. (Los Angeles Times)
