Bring Back The Bell Telephone Pavilion. That Was Cool
-
The New York State Pavilion from the 1964 World's Fair in Flushing Meadow Park has been closed for decades, still standing (barely) but closed to the public. It's too expensive to demolish, and there's a renovation plan but it's very expensive, too. They're reopening it for three hours next month to celebrate the fair's 50th anniversary, which is cool, but I wonder how many buildings are out there still standing but closed and useless. Ghost buildings. The most fascinating to me is the Phoenix Trotting Track west of Phoenix on I-10, a huge racetrack that failed after two years in operation and has sat decaying for almost 50 years, empty and undeveloped while the area around it is growing, a real mystery.
