Excuse Me While I Check Our Earthquake Emergency Kit
-
Yeah, we had a swarm of quakes this weekend here in lovely vibrating Southern California (yes, I felt the biggest one, and no, I didn't even get off the couch for it -- it felt like someone was gently shaking the house, and the couch drifted a little back and forth, but we're about 30 miles from the epicenter, so that was it). And because of that, the news is now filled with concern that this weekend's tremors could signify something "worse than the Big One," because the fault that blew -- the Puente Hills fault -- is under a very heavily developed area with a lot of buildings and people. A quake on that fault could kill from 3,000 to 18,000 people and leave as many as 750,000 people homeless. That's a lot more than if the San Andreas fault has an 8.0 quake. So, yeah, we might be on edge a little. (Los Angeles Times)
