Try To Lose Your Job At A Better Time
-
What's the most reliable predictor of how long you'll remain unemployed when you lose your job? Turns out it's not age or gender or location. It's when you lose your job, as in the timing. If the economy is bad, you'll be out longer. That's a lesson of 2008, and it means that it's all about bad luck -- if you happen to get cut when things are bad, you'll be way more likely to be long-term unemployed. And, in turn, that means it's practically impossible to come up with policies to fix that. Sucks to be... us. (FiveThirtyEight)
