Brunei is phasing in Sharia law, including for the 1/3 of residents who are NOT Muslims. The prospect of stonings for adultery and amputation for theft has people ready to boycott the Sultan of Brunei's holdings, which happen to include the storied Beverly Hills Hotel. Richard Branson has joined the boycott, and Ellen DeGeneres and Sharon Osbourne are among those promoting the boycott. The hotel management claims that "The laws that exist in other countries outside of where Dorchester Collection operates do not affect the policies that govern how we run our hotels," which misses the point. The point is that the owner of the business is the leader of a country and he's pushing for human rights to be violated. Do you want your hotel stay to pay for that, even in the most distant sense?
