Common Core is driving parents and students crazy, and you may not realize why people like Louis C.K. have been publicly decrying the curriculum. Perhaps this will explain: They make kids learn four different ways to add and other "creative," non-standard math variations, including multiplying using a "rectangular array" and learning "how numbers relate to each other." In other words, they're making kids learn touchy-feely new math concepts they will never, ever need to know, while obscuring the basics that have served society for centuries. Same for English lessons. It's all about "reform" education, a '90s concept that concentrated on teaching complicated holistic concepts before the basics. It's bunk, and now it's the way the government wants your kids to learn. Math's beauty is that it IS just numbers -- either you get it right or you don't. There's no "concept" to learn past that.
