It's For Your Own Bad... Er, Good

They haven't been that successful where they've been tried. And the locals have been vocal: They don't want 'em. So California's state department of transportation is ignoring public sentiment and turning the expensive new carpool lanes being constructed on the 405 freeway in Orange County and the existing carpool lanes there and turning them into "Lexus lanes," where you'll have to have a transponder and account and pay tolls every time you use them, although you won't need to have more than one person in the car for that. Now, I will admit, I have a transponder and use the toll lanes on the 110 freeway, because I need to, but it would be more helpful if the lanes were just carpool lanes or, better yet, just regular lanes to relieve the pressure of volume on the existing free lanes. Should they be forcing toll lanes on taxpayers? (Los Angeles Times)
