But Did He Forget George Costanza, Too?
-
Joe Torre's Hall of Fame speech went on more than twice as long as allotted, a full 28 minutes, and he thanked everybody who helped him along the way... except George Steinbrenner, who he only mentioned in passing in a way that indicated that Steinbrenner was difficult. Afterwards, Torre was apologetic, saying he had made a mistake and ran out of time. He also forgot Yankee trainer Gene Monahan and the Steinbrenner family. Whoops. And that points out how difficult these acceptance speeches are at any awards or Hall of Fame ceremony. You ARE going to forget people, and feelings WILL be hurt. The only way around it is if they banned on-stage thanks and told everyone to submit those separately in advance for a press release. (Newark Star Ledger/NJ.com)
