No Excuse For Looting, But No Excuse For Stonewalling After Shooting An Unarmed Man, Either
-
There was violence and looting overnight after the vigil for Mike Brown, the teen shot and killed by a Ferguson, MO cop, and that's a shame, because the acts of people using the situation to their own advantage -- free stuff! -- will in some minds cancel out the community's understandable rage. What's striking about the police position is that they focus on the struggle at the end but don't really address why the cop stopped the two dudes walking down the street in the first place. The police have yet to explain why they were stopped, even though they felt free to describe their version of the end game. That's suspicious. If there was probable -- even reasonable -- cause to stop him, the cops shouldn't have a problem revealing it. But instead, silence. (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)
