Just Name It After The Street It's On. Please
-
The Philadelphia transit system, SEPTA, has sold the naming rights to a train station -- Market East Station, which is on, oddly enough, the east-Center City part of Market Street, will now be Jefferson Station, named after the hospital that's a few blocks away. This is not the first time they've done that: The old Broad and Pattison stop right outside the sports complex is now AT&T Station. And SEPTA is planning to sell other station names to companies like Verizon and Comcast. But what does this do to help people know where they need to disembark? I used to ride that train, and I would have no idea where "Jefferson" is. Market East? Sure. Same for Suburban Station, which has been Suburban Station -- the old terminus for trains to the Main Line and western suburbs -- forever; if they changed it to Verizon Station, who would know where that is? Where the hell is AT&T? Shouldn't some things remain unsponsored? (Philadelphia Inquirer)
