What, Those Aren't Pigeons? Couldn't Tell

I admit, I have no idea what the appeal of bird watching is. Not a clue. But for birders, there's an annual event in downtown L.A. that's a big deal: the return of the Vaux's swifts to a particular rooftop at 5th and Spring. These are tiny, hard-to-see birds, and they swoop in during twilight, but birders go downtown with their binoculars and wait for the event. As I said, not sure what the appeal is, but it's interesting that this happens downtown, where events of nature normally don't occur. (Los Angeles Times)
