No, Doctor J Wasn't A Real Doctor
-
Dead: Ernie Vandeweghe, yes, Kiki's dad, but also a guy who did something rare that you can't do now: He was an NBA player and medical student at the same time, often rushing from class to game or even class to flight to game, making it barely on time or a little late, throwing his uniform on in the plane lavatory. He played 6 seasons with the Knicks before becoming a pediatrician. He was a star in college, though knee trouble cut his playing days short; he was paid by the game by the Knicks, who weren't ever sure he would make it to a particular game. But can you imagine someone doing that now? And can you imagine someone basically putting becoming a doctor above playing in the NBA these days? (New York Times)
