The Gift That Keeps On Giving
-
Bankruptcy is NOT supposed to haunt you forever. It's supposed to drop off your credit report after, what, seven years? Judges are suspecting, however, that banks, as a way to make some money out of the situation, are selling the discharged debt to collectors who demand payment to clear the debts off credit reports, which, in effect, would be extorting money from people who are not supposed to have to pay it. And that leaves the bad credit on the record past when it should have been discharged. There are billions of dollars in the selling-bad-debt business. (New York Times)
