Are You Bleeding? No? Then Can I Put You On Hold?

You have an emergency, you dial 911, and what happens? In this case in Pasco County, FL, a woman saw a drunk driver on the freeway, dialed 911, and it rang for 54 seconds. It took three tries to get through, by which time there was a crash. The 911 center people said they have to triage and take the most important calls first, which raises the question of how they know one ringing call is more important than another. But it also raises the question of expectations, whether waiting a full minute for someone to pick up is reasonable or whether we should expect and demand immediate response. (WFLA-TV/Tampa)
