I'd Still Prefer To Be Someplace Else When The Earth Moves

When you drive around here in L.A., you see the ridiculously high stacked freeway interchanges like the one I have to drive under fairly frequently at the 110-105 intersection and think, man, I would NOT want to be on or under that during a quake. in this article, experts tell us that those high stacked freeway ramp tangles are actually safe in a quake. Safe? After we saw overpasses on the 10 freeway collapse and ramps in the Valley fall down in the Northridge quake? Yes, they say that tall bridges are actually more flexible and can take the movement, and the columns have been reinforced with steel to keep the concrete from cracking. It's the shorter ones that are troublesome, say the engineers. I HOPE THEY'RE RIGHT. (Los Angeles Times)
