The Students Are More Interested In Alabama And Auburn Anyway
-
While everyone was paying attention to the Iron Bowl, down the road, it looks like despite winning a bowl berth, the University of Alabama-Birmingham will shut down its football program. The issue with this story is that there are a LOT of schools that have football -- or other athletic -- programs that loe money and don't really add much. I've always wondered why Temple persists in having a football program when there are empty stands even when they're winning. My college dropped football in the '70s, and Villanova dropped its bowl-level football program before I arrived and resumed only as I-AA (in which they're now a perennial powerhouse) after I left. In neither case did it feel like anything was missing. (Birmingham News/AL.com)
