Because They Think You Want To Hear The Horsepower

I knew that, because the cars can be silent, some electric and hybrid cars pump artificial engine noise through the speakers to let the operator know it's working. But they do it for Mustangs and trucks and other cars, too. Why? Because today's more efficient engines are a lot quieter, and they believe you want a powerful engine to SOUND powerful. But real gearheads hate it because it's not real, and if others knew that the sound they're hearing isn't really engine noise, they wouldn't want it, either. (Washington Post)
