The guy rattled around Brattleboro, VT for decades, working at a gas station and then JC Penney, seemingly pretty down on his luck, so much so that people would give him hats and rides around town. All he did was work and chop wood... and read the Wall Street Journal, which in retrospect was his tell, because when he died last June at 92, he left almost $8 million to the local hospital and library. Yes, the guy with the spartan home and old Toyota turned out to have massive investments, and his family and friends had no idea. What he was saving it for, who knows. (Brattleboro Reformer)
