If He'd Used The USPS, They Might Have Lost Him
-
Here's the vintage tale from the 1960s about the guy who, for reasons you can read about in the article, mailed himself from the U.K. home to Australia. You couldn't do that now because they screen all the cargo, but back then, he could have himself packed in a crate labeled as full of paint and have it shipped home. He didn't have the cash for a plane ticket; shipping was actually more expensive but they took cash on delivery, and he figured, correctly, that he could get out of the crate and walk away before the box moved from a cargo warehouse to its final (fictional) destination. It only became known because the friend who'd shipped him got worried when he didn't hear back and called the media. He later got charged with cocaine trafficking offenses in Australia, escaped the country, got arrested for drug offenses in Sri Lanka, got sentenced to death, appealed, won, and served his time in Australia, so this guy's life has more unusual, weird, dangerous stories than most.
