They Could Add TWO Lanes If They Got Rid Of The Car Pool Lane. But They Won't
-
Millions and millions of tax dollars were spent to widen the infamous 405 Freeway through the Sepulveda Pass between L.A.'s west side and the San Fernando Valley -- perhaps you remember Carmageddon. So, now that the freeway's wider, has it helped traffic? Nope. It may have sped things up in rush hour a grand total of two minutes. You do pick up more time after 7 pm, but that wasn't why they said they were doing this. They're thinking of restriping to add a lane, but what I think happened is simple: They widened the road, but only to add a car pool lane. And the car pool lane is empty, because people aren't car pooling and can't; they're all going to scattered locations, making car pooling impractical. You knew that, I knew that, and I bet THEY knew that, but they couldn't resist taking millions in tax dollars for a project, even though it wasn't going to work. (KABC-TV/Los Angeles)
