It's A Lovely Morning For Pointless Outrage
-
Once again, a school Pledge of Allegiance controversy: A school, celebrating foreign languages, had a student read the Pledge in Arabic. Cue outrage. Turns out that state law requires it to be read in English. But is this really that offensive? I mean, there ARE Arabic-speaking Americans. And as I always feel compelled to point out, the Pledge is one of the most ignored of symbolic gestures in school. You shuffle to your feet, you murmur along without actually enunciating ("ipledgelegance toflag Unitestatamerica"). You don't pay attention to the meaning, to the words, to anything, because you're a kid and it's boring to you. Only adults who have forgotten what it was like to be a kid get worked up over this stuff. (Middletown Times Herald Record)
