It's The Suspense That Gets Me
-
Imagine a slow-speed wreck. Now slow it down. Slower. Imagine you're in the path of a truck, you can't get out of the way, and it's coming at you.... very, very, VERY slowly. Yet you know it's likely to hit you, and there's nothing you can do about it. That's sort of what life must be like for one town on the Big Island in Hawaii, where a stream of lava bore down on the village, causing some evacuation, then... stopped. And is just... waiting. And the townsfolk are just... waiting. They don't know if it'll start up again, how fast it'll go, how long they have before everything gets swallowed and burned like some other towns. And even if it somehow misses the town, it could roll over the only main road to Hilo, the biggest city on the island, where many of them work (there are alternates and bridges in the works, but they're not ready if the lava starts flowing faster). It's agonizing to READ about it, let alone live it. (New York Times)
