Oil prices are way down from where they were over the past several years. So why are airfares still high? After all, oil is the primary reason given when the fares go up. When oil's cheaper, you're SUPPOSED to see prices fall. Why isn't that happening? Maybe lack of competition on most routes. Through consolidation, we now have fewer competitive routes; the big airlines have divvied up all the routes to allow each to monopolize certain trips. So, it's not quite a competitive free market. And we pay for it. (New York Times)
