Maybe There Should Have Been A Backlash In The Other States, Too
-
The backlash to the Indiana law allowing, in a sense, discrimination based on religious beliefs (you'll hear different descriptions of what it does, depending on who's talking) is confusing some Indiana residents, who point out that several other states passed identical laws without any reaction. So, why? That's a question you can use in a couple of ways: Why did they pass it, and why is it getting a reaction unlike that elsewhere? For the latter, maybe it's because we expect better of Indiana, which is conservative but with which we associate more progressive attributes, being in the north. Or maybe it's because it was the last straw. Or maybe it was an aggressive countermaneuver. Whatever the case, Indiana now has to figure out whether to keep going down this path or pull back, because it isn't going to go away soon. (Los Angeles Times)
