What If A Ref's Missing A Finger?

Ever notice that no college basketball jersey has a numeral higher than 5 on it? That's because the numbers 6, 7, 8, and 9 are banned. Literally. Why? Because they don't want confusion when the refs use hand signals to report fouls to the scorer's table. High schools do the same thing. They don't want you to hold up five fingers on one hand and three on the other to mean an 8, because the scorer and PA announcer might think it's 53 or 35. Of course, this does not seem to cause a problem in the NBA. And why they don't have Bluetooth in 2015 to communicate to the sideline, I have no idea. (New York Times)
