Everybody's Somebody's Friend

Of course, because this happens any time someone gets charged with a terrible crime, someone steps forward to say, well, he seemed nice to me. In the case of North Charleston cop Michael Slager, who shot and killed Walter Scott in the back on video, Slager's boss at his hugh school restaurant waiter's job says that he was nice back then. Yeah, that was years ago and he was a teenager. Would they even remember anything about him that seemed off? Meanwhile, a message to anyone inclined to jump to the cop's defense comes from the statistics that show blacks pulled over in significantly larger numbers than whites in North Charleston. You might say, well, maybe it's because the population there is more black than white, but I've seen it pretty much everywhere, and you tend to know the towns where the cops are more prone to pulling people over for driving while black. (One town in Central Jersey seemed to be especially bad for that; the cops would seemingly ONLY pull minority drivers over, for the usual busted-taillight kind of thing.)
