No Joke Here, Just Concern
-
Whenever there's a disaster, there are always people thinking, hey, I've been there, coulda been me. That, I admit, is what I thought as soon as the Amtrak derailment in Philadelphia hit the news. As I write this, we're still getting sketchy reports, clearly a lot of casualties; I'm watching Fox 29's coverage (they're streaming live) and concerned for the victims and, yeah, thinking that I rode those rails countless times over the years I lived back there, Amtrak and SEPTA, I can picture exactly where it happened, and, looking at the overturned and mangled train cars, I can't imagine how I would have responded. But it really is the first impulse to think that it coulda been me, or my friends, and that doesn't matter. Nobody should ever have to experience that horror. If you're reading this Tuesday night, here's a live stream of Fox 29's breaking news coverage. And Brian Ries has compiled a good Twitter list of reporters tweeting live coverage and photos. UPDATE: The Mayor says that at least five people are dead. It's that bad. (Philadelphia Inquirer)
