Tuition's Free. Textbooks, On The Other Hand, They're Gonna Cost Ya
-
Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) is proposing free tuition for all public four-year colleges. Free! Such a deal! But, you ask, doesn't it cost money to employ professors and build facilities and keep the lights on? Sure, $70 billion worth. So, it's not free, but who'll pay that? 67% would be paid by the federal government, which means higher taxes, which would be slapped on stock trades, which means, ultimately, you pay. The other third would be paid by the states, which would have to increase taxes, which means you pay. And, yes, you're paying for someone else to go to college, whether they need college or not, whether they SHOULD be in college or not, whether the degrees they get will be useful or not. But when it's producing more art and philosophy majors, who's quibbling about price? (USA Today)
