Because The Public Relates To Stiff, Non-Colloquial Language From The Government
-
British Lord Chancellor Michael Gove is giving his staff at the Ministry of Justice strict grammar rules, and people are rolling their eyes. Don't use "impact" as a verb; don't use contractions (in other words, DO NOT use contractions); don't write "ensure," write "make sure"; and many more rules are being imposed, some of which Gove himself has violated in columns written before his appointment. I can understand him wanting his staff to write clearly and accurately, and Lord knows that I, as an editor, have encountered atrocious grammar over the years. But do you want your boss to be the Grammar Police? Is your job tough enough without having to follow more rules, some of which (like the contraction one) are pretty arbitrary? (The Independent)
