Who Needs News Anyway? Just Print Ads And The Jumble

You want to know what happened to radio? Look no further than what's happened to newspapers, exemplified in this excerpt from an analysts' conference call with the McClatchy chain: An analyst asked whether the company could see its way into using more freelancers to "significantly reduce" costs further. Newspapers are spending way, way less than ever on reporting, so what's next, NO full-time reporters? Who's going to cover stuff that nobody wants to cover, like council meetings? You can't freelance everything, can you? Radio's in the same boat: It's Wall Street that wants to see cuts, and cuts are what they get. Do they care that the product is compromised? Oh, please. By the time the ship sinks, they'll be on to the next boat, plundering that, too. (Jim Romenesko)
