Los Angeles' own analysis suggests that the city's bid for the 2024 Summer Olympics might cost more than anticipated. A LOT more. In fact, while the group pushing for the bid claims that it'll cost $5.8 billion but turn a $160 million surplus, the analysis says the cost of the Olympic Village alone "may significantly exceed" the $1 billion included for it in the proposal, because the owner of the property, Union Pacific, has no plans to vacate the site. What's going on here is that the proponents are throwing out rosy numbers with no backing to indicate that they're at all realistic. And it's not 1984 anymore. Is an Olympics worth what it's gonna cost when the private funding doesn't cover the real expenses? (Los Angeles Times)
