Though It Just Isn't California Without A Pool
-
Backyard pools are a pain in the ass. We have one and it's expensive to maintain and you're always worrying that tree roots will bust through the concrete. But now, people here in Southern California are using the drought as an excuse to tear out their pools and replace them with, well, lawns. Which is silly as hell, since it turns out that lawns use up as much or more water -- especially if you put a cover on the pool -- and once you tally up the cost of demolition and replacement and irrigation, it's a wash (no pun intended). But it FEELS like you're doing something for the environment, and contractors, seeing a market opening up, are increasingly putting pressure on homeowners to do the deed. (Los Angeles Times)
