Is Bitter Really Better?
-
Once upon a time, there was a craft beer called Solidarity, and it was good, a dark, mild beer brewed by Eagle Rock Brewery in L.A. It was so good, it popped up all over the area. Now, the brewery says it's dropping the beer from its regular releases, relegating it to seasonal status, and it's because sales are way off. Why? Because people are all buying mega-hoppy beer, the hoppier, the better. And I have a theory on that. See, I'm not that crazy about the high-hop, high-alcohol IPAs that are fast taking over the world; I like some of them, but there's an arms race that seems to have started with San Diego's Stone IPAs and now means that if your beer isn't so hoppy that it peels paint, you're considered nothing. Even session beers are getting stronger. And for those of us who find ultra-hoppy ales too bitter, well, I guess we're supposed to drink Bud and PBR. Doesn't seem fair. (Los Angeles Times)
