I grew up in what was once a rural area of New Jersey. When I was a kid and living in a typical "Wonder Years"-style subdivision, there were still farms scattered all over the place -- we used to "skate" in the frozen-solid irrigation ditches of a corn field a short walk from my home, and there were cows and apple trees and everything. Little by little, those farms became more subdivisions. And here's one of the last, as DePiero's farm in Montvale, up by the Bergen-Rockland County border and a working farm for generations, finally closes, destined to be a shopping center with a Wegman's, where you'll be able to buy produce just like at the farm, except trucked in from Lord knows where. I'd be sadder about the loss of one of the last patches of open space and the area's agricultural past if I wasn't surprised that it still existed. I haven't been back much. (Bergen Record)
