When Everything's A Line Item
-
As we previously reported, the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News newsrooms, and the Philly.com staff, are being merged to save money. And the layoffs were worse than they'd said. But the interesting part is this: If you have to fire people because your company is still trying to figure out digital and social media, why would you fire the people best adapted to social media? And if the Daily News' biggest selling point is its unique, fabled sports department, why would you fire practically all of that paper's sportswriters? We often talk about how screwed up layoff decisions are in radio, but this is pretty inexplicable. (Philadelphia Magazine)
