I Want My Polka TV!
-
I have Verizon (for now) FiOS, and we've been losing some obscure cable channels lately, with the operator chalking it up to cost savings and lack of audience. But one of those channels is fighting back: RFD-TV, which is marshaling its rural audience and challenging Verizon's claims that it just costs too much. 10 cents a subscriber per month is the cost, and the guy who runs the network points out that a) that's relatively tiny, b) they haven't raised the rate, and c) Verizon seems to be systematically weeding out its rural-oriented channels. Now, I've only watched that channel as a joke to see the throwback-style polka shows (I miss the unintended campiness Big Joe, actually; Molly B is more contemporary and self-aware, which means she's talented but not as unintentionally hilarious), and I wouldn't pay for it if offered the option, but I'd rather have it available than not. This is where streaming would be a good thing; if you can get it free or cheap on your Apple TV or Roku, it's another reason to cut the cord, because you, not the cable company, should be able to decide what channels you can watch.
