If You Build It, They Won't Come

Los Angeles County has spent an absolute fortune on expanding local mass transit, bolstered by a public vote some years back to hand over a ton of tax money to the government to do it, because everyone loves trains and we were told it would be important to add routes to get people out of their cars because environment and traffic and stuff. The result: Ridership is way down. No, really, they spent millions on the Expo Line and extending the Gold Line and putting in new bus routes and people are roundly rejecting the very idea of riding them. It's not news to me; I sometimes pass right under the Expo Line station at La Cienega and the Green Line in Redondo and on the 110 and the train cars are usually empty. Personally, when I'm traveling, I always take subways and light rail, but they really are awful investments of tax dollars. (Los Angeles Times)
