They Screw Up, We Pay. That's Generally How It Works
-
About a week ago, I got the December-January gas bill for our house and it was... well, astronomical, at least compared to other Winter months. I mean, double, easy. What I didn't know is that this was the case for a lot of homes in Southern California, and while the gas company (marketed under the unique name The Gas Company) says that, well, it was cold, some folks, including one L.A. councilman, wonder if they're jacking up the bills to pay for the Porter Ranch out-of-control gas leak. You know, the one that's being called an environmental disaster, the one the city was helping them ignore until Erin Brockovich and others made too much noise to ignore. Is the gas company making me and everyone else around here pay for its own problems? Will we really ever know? (KABC-TV/Los Angeles)
