The Solution Is Telecommuting, But Nobody Wants To Go There
-
I've told you about the freeways around here in L.A. that have "express lanes" -- car pool lanes that double as toll lanes in which solo drivers can go if they pay (often high) tolls for the privilege. I use the 110 freeway's express lanes when I go up to downtown or Nerdist's Burbank offices, and I have the little transponder so I can pay. But, especially coming home in the evening, despite high tolls (almost eight bucks the other day), the express lanes are so busy that you don't really save any time. Turns out that the toll lanes are slowing down overall, and officials are completely baffled over what to do about it. They keep raising the tolls to try to get solo drivers to decide it's not worth the money (it's free for cars with more than one occupant), but that hasn't driven anyone away. So if you're paying, you're getting practically no benefit over sitting in traffic in the other four or five lanes. It seems like there's no answer to heavy traffic and it's only getting worse.
