A couple is accused of setting up a card table in front of a Stop 'n' Shop and collecting money for a fake charity, which raises the question: How do you know that the person sitting in front of a supermarket is collecting for a legitimate charity? It's easy online -- you can check into any charity's legitimacy, including how they distribute the money and how much they spend on administration. But when someone's just sitting there with a jar for cash, you don't know. I know, I'm a little sensitive about this because my wife works for a (very legit) charity, but collecting for a fake charity is pretty reprehensible. (Bergen Record)
