That's A Hard Legacy To Hide, Though
-
Remember Vince Li? No? Well, Google that name and you'll discover that he was the guy who beheaded a fellow bus passenger on a Greyhound in Manitoba eight years ago. But he now wants to change his name to Will Baker and begin to live independently. He was found not liable due to mental illness (schizophrenia) and has been held in a mental ward since, but he's been getting increasing freedoms including escorted trips away from the hospital and, now, moving to a group home. Here's the thing: Assuming the determination was accurate, the guy was not in control of his mind when he beheaded the poor victim. If he's now on his meds and improving, and he was, remember, not guilty due to the mental illness, can you say he can't start over? (Toronto Star)
