It Was A Violation, And Violations Get Punished. So No Surprise
-
Erin Andrews was awarded $55 million in her civil case against the guy who videotaped her through the peephole and the hotels that enabled him, and if you're about to say, hey, it helped her career, as I've heard people suggest, think about it for a few more minutes. Look, her privacy was violated, period. That's traumatic and that's deserving of a big verdict no matter what happened afterwards. There has to be a penalty, a big one, because people can't be allowed to think that it's OK to do that (or to let a stranger find out where someone's hotel room is and book one next door) and that there's no downside to videotaping an unsuspecting person, celebrity or not, and trying to sell the result. $55 million? Sure. Not that she'll be able to actually collect that amount, necessarily, but the verdict's hardly outrageous. (The Tennessean)
