In the movies, a story like this one would have a very different feel to it, but in real life, when a couple took an elderly homeless woman in, the warm feelings were in short supply. She was a handful, yelling and complaining and not showing a lot of gratitude -- more like the opposite -- but for the last three or so years of her life, they gave her a safe, warm bed and family, while her blood-related family -- her kids -- wanted nothing to do with her. She was, it seems, a nasty piece of work. But mental illness can make someone that way, and so the good Samaritans overlooked her cursing and seeming ingratitude and helped her, even as public assistance was pulled (the state stops helping as soon as someone else helps you) and her illnesses forced them to put her in a nursing home. It's an interesting story of doing good even when it's not appreciated, and it's in a new book, too, which means that maybe THIS will be a movie. (Philadelphia Daily News)
