Where Were They When Radio Was Being... Oh, Forget It

Tribune Publishing already owns the L.A. Times and San Diego Union-Tribune, and if their winning bid for the Orange County Register and Riverside Press Enterprise goes to closing, they'll have a stranglehold on newspaper circulation in Orange, San Diego, and Riverside Counties and a still-dominant position in Los Angeles and San Bernardino Counties. And because of this and the spectre of Tribune having 98% of daily circulation and revenue in OC, the Justice Department is suing to block the deal. And, yes, having one owner hold so many of the papers -- that would leave just Tribune and the Digital First suburban L.A. papers -- might be a bad thing, what the DOJ doesn't seem to recognize is that THIS IS 2016. NEWSPAPERS ARE DYING. IT DOESN'T MATTER WHO OWNS THEM ANYMORE. One company will end up with all of them at some point anyway. Competition is best, but there's not enough business to go around anymore. (Orange County Register)
