Then They Can Tell People Under 30 Who Bob Hope Was
-
The problem, it appears, with renaming an airport after a dignitary is that it might obscure the actual location of the airport, and it makes Google searches more difficult, too. That's the reason people are wondering whether there's value in a new name for Bob Hope Airport, so that people know it's actually Burbank and an option for Los Angeles. They don't want to change the formal name, but want a marketing name that includes L.A. so out-of-towners realize that they can use it instead of LAX. The funny thing is, living here and having one of my employers have its headquarters a three minute drive away from that airport, I have NEVER heard ANYONE refer to it as Bob Hope Airport. It's "Burbank Airport" to everyone here. Same for John Wayne Airport, which is called "Orange County Airport" by everyone. (LAX is LAX, Ontario is Ontario, Long Beach is Long Beach.) But does the name of the airport matter? When you book a flight, don't you just pick the city and let the airline website show you your options? (Los Angeles Times)
